Nortel retirees call for emergency legislation to protect pensions
Nortel pensioners are calling on the federal and provincial government to providing funding for their pensions, and asking for new legislation that would allow retirees to hop to the front of the line in case of bankrupcy.
This all came about as a
result of a complaint lodged by a new resident of the village with city of Ottawa Rideau/Goulbourn
ward councillor Glenn Brooks. Having recently moved to Richmond
from Stittsville, he was able to compare his previous sewer charge in
Stittsville to his new charge in Richmond.
It turned out that the Richmond rate was
substantially higher even though Richmond
only has piped sewer service and no water service.
The other recent trend is a
growing lack of support from parents with regard to marijuana and cannabis use
by their children. Sgt. Ferguson said that school officials and the police are
frustrated because parents are not seeing marijuana use as a serious offense.
Larry O'Brien may take the stand in his own trial when it continues next month, after Judge Douglas Cunningham threw out the mayor's defence team's motion to drop the charges.
